The Speight's brand and brewery was established in 1876 by James Speight, Charles Greenslade and William Dawson and still occupies the original site in Rattray Street, Dunedin. For southerners, Speight's is a badge of belonging. It expresses what makes them feel good about being from the South. For northerners, Speight's represents the South, which is a nostalgic ideal, the last bastion of treasured NZ values of a bygone era. The "Southern Man" gives the attitudes and characteristics of Speight's a physical form - it is a mystical and aspirational personification of Speight's. The "Pride of the South" is the positioning line that connects Speight's to its original homeland and fundamental local pride. It is relevant throughout NZ. This amber ale is the legacy of the South. Speight's is traditionally brewed from choice Nelson hops, the finest Canterbury barley and water to produce a full strength ale, more bitter than other mainstream draught beers. |
